Google Business Profile Special Hours: How to Set Holiday and One-Off Hours

Learn when to use Google Business Profile Special hours, how to set holiday hours, when to edit regular hours, and when Temporarily closed fits better.

Overview

A one-day holiday schedule should not force you to rewrite your normal business hours.

That is what Special hours in Google Business Profile are for.

Google currently says Special hours can be used when a business temporarily changes its operating hours or remains closed for up to six consecutive days. Typical uses include holidays, special events and other short exceptional circumstances.

The important part is choosing the right hours field. A one-day closure, a permanent schedule change and a two-week shutdown are three different situations. Treating them as the same thing creates confusing profile information for customers.

Special hours vs regular hours vs Temporarily closed

Use this decision table first.

Google's current guidance draws a clear line: Special hours cover short exceptions, while a closure of seven or more consecutive days should use Temporarily closed.

When should you use Special hours?

Use Special hours when the normal week remains correct but one or several dates are different.

Examples:

The regular weekly schedule stays intact. The exception applies to the selected date.

  • Thanksgiving Day closure;
  • December 24 closing at 2 PM instead of 6 PM;
  • a one-day staff training closure;
  • a special event that extends opening hours;
  • a short weather-related change;
  • two vacation days;
  • a local festival day with a different schedule.

When should you edit regular hours instead?

Edit regular hours when the recurring schedule itself has changed.

For example:

Old schedule:

New permanent schedule:

That is not a temporary exception. Update the regular hours.

A useful test is:

Will this schedule still be true six weeks from now?

If the answer is yes, it is probably a regular-hours change rather than a Special hours exception.

  • Monday-Friday: 9 AM-5 PM
  • Saturday: 9 AM-1 PM
  • Monday-Thursday: 9 AM-6 PM
  • Friday: 9 AM-3 PM
  • Saturday: closed

When should you use Temporarily closed?

Google currently directs businesses to mark the profile Temporarily closed when they are closed for seven or more consecutive days or for an unknown period.

Examples:

Do not chain together many one-day Special hours entries simply to avoid using the appropriate closure status.

  • a two-week renovation;
  • a seasonal shutdown lasting several weeks;
  • an indefinite closure after building damage;
  • a longer vacation during which the business will not operate.

Special hours vs More hours

These fields solve different problems.

Special hours

Special hours are date-specific exceptions to the normal schedule.

Example:

Tuesday, December 24: 9 AM-2 PM instead of 9 AM-6 PM.

More hours

Google uses More hours for certain service-specific or business-specific schedules that differ from the main business hours.

Depending on the profile and category, that can include eligible activities or services with their own recurring schedule.

Do not use More hours as an improvised holiday-hours field.

How to set Special hours on Google Business Profile

Google's current steps are:

After saving, Google says the special hours can be found in the Hours area of Business information or under Edit profile.

Google may review edits before they appear publicly, so do not stop at “Save.”

Check the customer-facing profile too.

  1. Go to your Business Profile.
  2. Select Edit profile.
  3. Select Hours.
  4. In the Business hours section, find Special hours and select Edit.
  5. Choose a suggested date, add a custom date or edit an existing date.
  6. Enter the special opening and closing hours, or mark the date closed.
  7. Save the change.

How to mark a business closed all day

For a full-day closure:

Use this for a holiday or one-off closure that is shorter than Google's seven-day Temporarily closed threshold.

  1. Open Special hours.
  2. Select the date.
  3. Keep the Closed option selected.
  4. Save.
  5. Check the public profile after the edit is processed.

How to set shorter holiday hours

Suppose your normal Friday hours are 9 AM-6 PM, but on a holiday Friday you will close at 2 PM.

Enter that date under Special hours as:

9 AM-2 PM

Do not change every Friday to 9 AM-2 PM.

After the holiday, your regular Friday schedule remains 9 AM-6 PM.

How to set longer hours for one date

Special hours also work when you stay open longer.

Example:

Normal Saturday:

10 AM-2 PM

Special event Saturday:

9 AM-6 PM

Enter the event date and the extended hours.

If the event itself deserves promotion, you can also create a Business Profile Event post. The hours field and the post do different jobs: one tells Google when the business is open; the other explains what is happening.

How to enter split hours on one day

Google currently supports multiple sets of Special hours for one date.

Example:

Open 9 AM-12 PM Closed 12 PM-2 PM Open 2 PM-6 PM

Use the option to add another set of hours.

This is useful when a business closes midday for a private event, team meeting or break but reopens later.

What if special hours extend past midnight?

Google states that one set of Special hours cannot exceed 24 hours.

If the special period crosses into the next day, split it across dates.

For example:

If you need hours later on January 1 as well, include those hours explicitly for that date.

  • December 31: 7 PM-midnight
  • January 1: midnight-2 AM

Confirm holiday hours even when nothing changes

Google currently recommends confirming hours for official holidays even when they are the same as regular hours.

Why?

Because the profile can then communicate that the holiday hours have been confirmed rather than leaving customers uncertain about whether the normal schedule still applies.

For a service business, this is a small maintenance task with a simple customer benefit: fewer “Are you open today?” questions.

A holiday-hours checklist for service businesses

Use this checklist one to two weeks before a known holiday.

1. Decide whether the business is actually open

Do not start inside Google.

Start with the real operation.

Ask:

  • Is the location open?
  • Is phone or front-desk coverage available?
  • Are appointments being performed?
  • Are walk-ins accepted?
  • Are only some staff working?
  • Is this an appointment-only day?
  • Is there a midday closure?

2. Choose the right GBP setting

Pick:

  • Special hours;
  • Regular hours;
  • More hours;
  • Temporarily closed.

3. Check your booking schedule separately

Business Profile hours and bookable appointment availability are not the same thing.

A salon might be open 9 AM-6 PM while only one stylist is bookable from 10 AM-3 PM.

A studio might be open for staff work but have no client sessions that day.

If the actual booking schedule changes, update the booking system separately.

OneStudio supports working hours, time off/date exceptions and online booking where those modules are used. Its public feature set does not claim automatic synchronization of Google Business Profile hours, so treat GBP maintenance and OneStudio availability as separate checks. See OneStudio features for current product scope.

4. Check your website

If the holiday changes customer-facing opening hours, review:

Do not manually rewrite evergreen pages for every minor change if they do not show temporary hours.

  • contact page;
  • footer;
  • location page;
  • announcement banner;
  • booking instructions.

5. Save Special hours

Use the Google Business Profile editor.

6. Verify the public profile

Search for the business as a customer would.

Check:

  • correct date;
  • correct open/close times;
  • closed status if applicable;
  • no accidental change to the regular week.

7. Recheck after the holiday

Make sure the normal schedule is showing again.

Example: salon closing early on December 24

Normal Tuesday hours:

9 AM-6 PM

Holiday schedule:

December 24: 9 AM-2 PM December 25: Closed December 26: 11 AM-4 PM

Set all three dates as Special hours.

Then separately adjust staff availability or appointment schedules for those dates if the booking calendar differs.

The Business Profile tells customers when the business is operating. The booking system determines what they can actually reserve.

Example: photographer who works by appointment

A photographer may not have walk-in retail hours at all.

If the Business Profile already represents the business with an appropriate customer-facing hours model, do not use Special hours merely because one session slot disappears.

A booking cancellation or full calendar day is not necessarily a change to public business hours.

Use Special hours only when the business's stated customer-facing operating hours for that date genuinely change.

Example: mobile cleaning company

Suppose a mobile cleaning business normally operates Monday-Friday, 8 AM-5 PM.

It closes for a company training day on Wednesday.

That is a clean Special hours case:

Wednesday: Closed

You do not need to modify the regular Wednesday schedule.

If the company also serves only certain locations, review the Google Business Profile Service Area guide for the separate service-area setting.

Multi-location businesses: spreadsheet option

Google currently supports setting Special hours through a bulk upload spreadsheet for businesses managing multiple profiles.

The Special hours column uses date-and-time formatting, and an x can mark an all-day closure.

This is an operational tool, not a reason to make edits without review.

Before importing a multi-location spreadsheet:

Google warns that spreadsheet columns can affect existing data, so bulk edits deserve extra care.

  • confirm each location's real holiday schedule;
  • do not assume every location follows headquarters;
  • inspect the affected columns carefully;
  • verify a sample of public profiles after processing.

Common Special-hours mistakes

Mistake 1: editing regular hours for one holiday

This accidentally changes the normal recurring week.

Fix: use Special hours for the date-specific exception.

Mistake 2: using a post instead of the hours field

A post saying “Closed Monday” is helpful context but does not replace the business-hours setting.

Fix: update the hours field and optionally publish the post.

Mistake 3: changing GBP because appointment slots changed

A fully booked day does not automatically mean the business is closed.

Fix: distinguish operating hours from appointment availability.

Mistake 4: using Special hours for a two-week closure

Google's current threshold is up to six consecutive closed days.

Fix: use Temporarily closed for seven or more consecutive days or an unknown closure period.

Mistake 5: forgetting split hours

A business that closes 12-2 PM and reopens at 2 PM should not show itself as continuously open.

Fix: add multiple hour periods for the date.

Mistake 6: saving but never checking the public profile

Edits can be reviewed or delayed.

Fix: verify what customers actually see.

Mistake 7: making every platform show a different schedule

Your website, profile, voicemail and booking instructions should not contradict one another.

Fix: decide the real schedule first, then update the customer-facing surfaces that need it.

What if Special hours will not save?

Start with the basics:

Current community discussions in 2026 still show occasional cases where Special hours edits appear stuck or disappear. That is a reason to verify the public result, not a reason to assume every failed save has the same cause.

  1. Confirm you are signed into the account that manages the profile.
  2. Confirm the profile is verified and editable.
  3. Check whether another profile edit is pending.
  4. Try the current Google Search/Maps management interface.
  5. Re-enter the date and hours carefully.
  6. Check the public profile to see whether the change has already processed.
  7. If the field continues to fail, use Google Business Profile support rather than inventing a workaround.

Keep the public schedule boringly accurate

Holiday-hours work is not glamorous, which is exactly why it is valuable.

Customers do not want a clever explanation when they are standing outside a closed door. They want the right hours before they leave home.

Use Special hours for the short exception, keep the normal week intact, verify the public profile and make sure your booking schedule tells the same operational truth.

For the broader profile setup, see Google Business Profile Services and Google Business Profile Service Area.

Questions businesses ask

How many days can Google Business Profile Special hours cover?

Google currently says Special hours can be used when a business changes hours or remains closed for up to six consecutive days. For a closure of seven or more consecutive days, or an unknown period, Google recommends Temporarily closed.

Should I set holiday hours if my normal hours are unchanged?

Google currently recommends confirming hours for official holidays even if they are the same as the regular schedule. It helps make the holiday information explicit to customers.

Do Special hours permanently change my normal schedule?

No. Special hours apply to selected dates. Use regular hours for a permanent recurring schedule change.

Can I enter two opening periods on the same holiday?

Yes. Google's current Special hours workflow supports multiple sets of hours for a date.

Do I need to change my booking availability too?

Only if your actual bookable schedule changes. Google Business Profile operating hours and booking availability are separate concepts. If you use OneStudio for booking, update the relevant availability or date exception independently; do not assume the GBP change syncs automatically.
